About the parents
- ‘Jaws’ — a registered cultivar, BCR #14722. It was registered in 2018, with Makoto Saito handling the registration documents, but its origin, breeder and parentage were never recorded in the BCR.
- marnier-lapostollei — the species Dyckia marnier-lapostollei, written ML in our shorthand.
ProfilePROFILE
The leaves are densely coated in white trichomes; seen from above, the rosette reads almost pure silvery white. The leaves open wide and flat in a radial rosette, their margins deeply wavy. The marginal teeth are large and white, recurving like hooks in a dense row, and the rippled leaf surface throws a pattern of light and shade. The name refers to that pattern and colour:they resemble engawa, the muscle that moves a flounder's fin. An original cross by togenot., selected from the ‘Jaws’ × marnier-lapostollei seedling grex (2022).
NotesNOTES
An original cross by togenot., selected from the ‘Jaws’ × marnier-lapostollei seedling grex (2022). The grex as a whole is followed under the record tags #tgn_hyb_jm_01 and #tgn_hyb_jm_02; the individual named from among them is ‘Engawa’, and the records of the whole cross are gathered on this page. The name comes from engawa — the muscle that moves a flounder's fin — which the pattern and colour of the leaves resemble. 'Engawa' is also a word that carries as-is at sushi restaurants overseas. The plant in the 2025-12-05 post is that ‘Engawa’. We follow ‘Engawa’ itself under its own record tag, #tgn_dyc_engawa.
