Reading the FormulaFORMULA DECODED
The parentage in the data table — (‘Brittle Star’ F3 D011 × ‘Warren’) × Dyckia estevesii — first makes the cross in brackets, then crosses it with a seedling of that grex.
-
STEP 1 — THE INNER CROSS
‘Brittle Star’ F3 D011 × ‘Warren’
→ the seedling grex (the page for this cross). That page records Sueb as its breeder.
-
STEP 2 — THE CROSS
grex seedling × estevesii
→ the plant on this page. The data table gives no crossed year or record tag. We record it as a cross carrying the line of its parent ‘Warren’ onward to estevesii.
About the parents
- ‘Brittle Star’ F3 D011 — line D011 of the F3 seedling grex of ‘Brittle Star’ (BCR #2335).
- ‘Warren’ — a registered cultivar, BCR #2394, bred by Bill Baker. Its own parentage is marnier-lapostollei × ‘Brittle Star’, and the trail stops there.
- estevesii — the species Dyckia estevesii, a species native to Brazil.
ProfilePROFILE
A rosette of radially opening leaves, which we record in the lead photograph from directly above in its pot. The leaf surface is a deep red-brown with no conspicuous trichomes, and it takes on a sheen in the light. The marginal teeth are small and white, following the outline of each leaf. An original cross by togenot. Its parent ‘Warren’ is a registered cultivar by Bill Baker (BCR #2394), and we record the cross as carrying that line onward to the Brazilian species estevesii.
The BCR record notes that the parent ‘Warren’ was named by Baker in honour of his father, and it also preserves Baker's own description of the plant: “Wide silver leaves w/large white spines.”
NotesNOTES
An original cross: an F3 generation of ‘Brittle Star’ (line D011) crossed with ‘Warren’, then crossed with the species estevesii. The plant was also featured in @barracude’s rotating-Dyckia reels, where it drew a strong response. As ‘Warren’ itself is the registered marnier-lapostollei × ‘Brittle Star’, we record this cross as carrying that line onward to estevesii.
