Category Cultivar
Origin A Bill Baker hybrid (clone selected and kept by Tropiflora)

ProfilePROFILE

The leaves open radially, with new growth at the centre tightly furled in a spiral. A thick coat of white trichomes makes the surface read silvery grey, with dark purple-brown showing through in patches beneath. The marginal teeth are large and white, set in a wavy, widely spaced row. A named cultivar, recorded under the tag #tgn_dyc_mercury.

The hybrid was made by Bill Baker; Tropiflora obtained ‘Brittle Star’ F2 seedlings from him and selected this one from among them to keep and propagate. It is not registered in the BCR.

Seedlings Michael Kiehl raised by selfing this ‘Mercury’ became the Battle series (‘Battle Axe’ and others). Domestic records also tell of a plant grown in Japan as the original clone of ‘Mercury’, which once produced a sport with almost no spines.

white / silver black / dark red
