STEP 1 — THE CROSS
distachya aurea × sthreliana
→ the plant on this page, bred by Q Dyckia and recorded under this formula on his label.
About the parents
- distachya aurea — the parent entered on the label as aurea of the species Dyckia distachya.
- sthreliana — the label spelling is sthreliana, but the accepted spelling of the true species is strehliana. On Q Dyckia's post of 13 March 2017, Henrique Mallmann Büneker — a co-describer of the true Dyckia strehliana — commented that it is not a hybrid of D. strehliana. In reply, Q explained that the parent was his garden Dyckia distachya rubra, which Constantino Gastaldi had named “sthreliana”. The parent was therefore in fact distachya rubra under that garden name.
ProfilePROFILE
Long, narrow leaves layer over one another, several rosettes growing together into a dense, mounded cluster. The leaves are green at the base with little visible trichome cover, some of them taking on a coppery-brown to purplish tint. The leaf tips taper to sharp points, and the marginal teeth are fine and understated. Bred by Q Dyckia and recorded as the cross distachya aurea × sthreliana.
NotesNOTES
Dyckia distachya aurea × sthreliana is a named cultivar. We record it in 1 Instagram post, on 2025-01-20. Record tag(s): #tgn_dyc_distachyaaureasthreliana.
This cross is recorded under Q Dyckia's label “distachya aurea × sthreliana”. On Q Dyckia's Instagram post of 13 March 2017 showing the same cross, however, Dr. Henrique Mallmann Büneker — co-author of Dyckia strehliana (Büneker & R.Pontes, 2013) — publicly questioned the identification, writing “It is not hybrid of D. strehliana.” In reply, Q explained that the parent plant in his garden was Dyckia distachya rubra, which Constantino Gastaldi had called “Dyckia sthreliana”. The “sthreliana” parent of this cross is therefore not true Dyckia strehliana, but is understood to be a distachya (the rubra form). The name is kept on this page as Q's label of record, and the spelling “sthreliana” likewise follows that label; the accepted spelling of the species name is strehliana.
