ProfilePROFILE
Leaves overlap radially, the centre closing in a tightly wound spiral. The centre of each leaf is dark, near black, with white trichomes scattered over it in a strong black-and-white contrast. The marginal teeth are large and white, set densely and setting off the darkness of the leaves. Bred by Bill Baker, and registered in the Bromeliad Cultivar Register as BCR #12763.
The name honours William (Bill) Paylen, a pioneer California bromeliad grower and former president of the Bromeliad Society International. At Lotusland in Montecito he designed the Fern Garden and redesigned and expanded the Bromeliad Gardens. A photograph dated 17 July 2004 shows Baker holding this plant as he presented it to Paylen, and is published on Constantino's blog, Dyckia Brazil.
